Many women living in poverty get trapped in a cycle of addiction and incarceration because they can’t see a way out. Becca Stevens created Thistle Farms as a safe space, so the women who have been trapped in that cycle can begin to heal. At it’s base, it’s a 2 year home that women can live in without the financial and emotional pressures that can push people into relapse.
When the women started coming to the house, Becca noticed that they were doing great with their recovery but they were still dirt poor. That’s when they created the bath and body company also named Thistle Farms and staffed it entirely with the women. The women in the program run everything from making the soaps and lotions to marketing and PR, gaining valuable job skills and an even more valuable sense of self worth.
Their social enterprise has expanded to include cafes, retail outlets and a global market place where they sell products from women all over the world…. all run by women.
These jobs pull them out of the poverty cycle and ready them for an independent life, all without a single dollar of tax payer money. Keeping true to what so many of the businesses featured here believe, that the only thing you need to give people is an opportunity.
