Krochet Kids

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Krochet Kids began as 3 surfers and crochet enthusiasts who sought to teach people in developing countries how to crochet as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty. What developed was global network of empowerment and social responsibility that produced some darn cool clothes and accessories.

Their model: They identify the most vulnerable women in living in poverty in countries like Peru and Uganda, and train them to sew knit and crochet. Then they offer them safe, fair-wage jobs and pair them with mentors so they can realize their present and future potential. Having access to fair paying jobs with diginity enables these women to care for their families and send their children to higher levels of education. Generations are impacted through the employment of their mothers and care-givers.

Krochet Kids goes to great depths to ensure their model actually results in empowerment. They developed an extensive monitoring and evaluation system that measures a series of empowerment indicators every month. The result is a real-time understanding of their social impact and proof that the model is working.

The Results:

Personal income grows to be 10X larger than pre-KKi levels. More income means a greater capacity to invest in the long-term wellbeing of her family.

Savings levels increase by 25X. Savings provide a safety net during hard times, a way to handle unforeseen expenses and the seed capital to start a business.

• Families are 5x more likely to have access to healthcare when sick.

• Women are 40% less likely to be physically abused.

• Women are 25% more likely to participate in major family decisions.

• Children are 8X more likely to attend high school if their mother participates in our program. In places where higher education is rare, children who finish high school have significantly more opportunities than those who don’t.

Buying a Krochet Kids product is the best of what what conscious consumerism can do. You get a high quality product like The World’s Greatest Beanie for $50 (made of 100% alpaca wool), The Hartley Pants for $59, or  The Pike Weekender Bag for $98, and  you also get to continue this story of empowerment. Each piece they make is hand-signed by the woman who made it, giving you a window into what this impact looks like for one person.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/127849514″ align=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/140120491″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Thistle Farms

Women
Poverty

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Thistle Farms provides economic independence to women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction, right here in the US,  through a two-year residential program based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Many women living in poverty get trapped in a cycle of addiction and incarceration because they can’t see a way out. Becca Stevens created Thistle Farms as a safe space, so the women who have been trapped in that cycle can begin to heal. At it’s base, it’s a 2 year home that women can live in without the financial and emotional pressures that can push people into relapse.

When the women started coming to the house, Becca noticed that they were doing great with their recovery but they were still dirt poor. That’s when they created the bath and body company also named Thistle Farms and staffed it entirely with the women. The women in the program run everything from making the soaps and lotions to marketing and PR, gaining valuable job skills and an even more valuable sense of self worth.

Their social enterprise has expanded to include cafes, retail outlets and a global market place where they sell products from women all over the world…. all run by women.

These jobs pull them out of the poverty cycle and ready them for an independent life, all without a single dollar of tax payer money. Keeping true to what so many of the businesses featured here believe, that the only thing you need to give people is an opportunity.

This is one of those Good Businesses where the products are competitively priced, daily essentials. In other words, you’d buy it anyway. But when you buy body wash, lip balm or bug spray, from Thistle Farms you’re also giving a woman in a fight for her life, a chance.

Damn Handsome Grooming Co.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Brewers’ spent grain is the major by-product of the brewing industry, representing around 85-90% of the total by-products generated. It’s also high in protein and nutrients this is where Damn Handsome Grooming Co. comes in. They collect this material that would otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into nutrient rich men’s skin products. Oats, barley and wheat are mineral-rich super grains packed full of powerful antioxidants and proteins, which help preserve the texture of the skin and help repair damaged hair.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row”][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]DOES YOUR DOG ‘THINK GLOBAL’?

Americans own more pets than any other country in the world and we take great care of them, which is amazing! But what if you bought your dog a new toy AND helped feed orphans & widows in Ethiopia at the same time?! It’s a true WIN-WIN.

WO Founder, Josh Allen, returned to Montana from a trip to Ethiopia in the fall of 2012. He had spent time in local villages and in Addis Abbaba (the capital city of Ethiopia) working with widows and orphans. He was astonished at how difficult it was to get resources and supplies for regular health care and nutrition to the area.

Wo Design Founder

While there, he felt called to commit to ensuring these widows & orphans had an adequate source of home-cooked meals and nutrition.

Eight years prior to Josh’s trip, he and his wife started a local pet supply store in Bozeman, MT, called Dee-O-Gee.

Dee-O-Gee sells high quality, made in the USA, pet supplies and food for conscious pet owners.

Josh decided that, based on knowledge gained from sales in their Dee-O-Gee stores, that he would develop a line of pet toys to sell not only in their store but other independent pet stores across the country. He would dedicate a percentage of the sales to the purchase of nutritional aid for Widows & Orphans in Ethiopia. And thus started WO Design (W for widows and O for orphans).

The first two toys in the WO Play collection were an interactive chew toy (the Bone) and a flying disc/tug toy (the Disc). As of the end of 2016, WO Design has successfully provided over 14,000 meals for widows & orphans in Ethiopia and has plans for providing aid in other parts of the world (with your help) as well.

CREATING CHANGE

Each WO product you purchase directly funds meals for widows and orphans globally. We’ve partnered with an organization in Ethiopia called Bring Love In.

(BLI) to help feed orphans and widows in their organization, thereby creating a tangible change – daily, globally. These meals in Ethiopia often represent the highest amount of nutrition that these folks get in any given day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row”][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
